Local woman hurt in crash
By Beth Nottley, News Assistant
Theresa Ann Venable, 42, of Idyllwild, who was severely injured in a
head-on collision at 8:55 p.m. Thursday, June 25, is still hospitalized
at Desert Regional Medical Center while being treated for injuries that
include a shattered kneecap, 10 broken ribs and a fractured pelvis.
Venable is the daughter of former Riverside County 3rd District
Supervisor Jim Venable.
Venable was attending a barbecue at the Pine Cove home of her boss,
Steve DeRoss of Camp Buckhorn. She borrowed his pickup truck, a 1989
Ford Ranger, to go get cheese for the burgers. When she didn’t return
in a timely fashion, DeRoss decided to go looking for her and came upon
a horrific scene on Highway 243 south of Point of Rocks Drive.
The front end of his truck was mangled, the entire chassis buckled. The
windshield was shattered and the steering column bent at a nearly
45-degree angle. California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officer M.J. Murawski
told him that Venable had been badly injured and had just been taken by
ambulance to a local helicopter site to be airlifted by Mercy Air to
the hospital.
“I looked at the vehicle and I thought she couldn’t have survived,”
said DeRoss. Although his recently rebuilt pickup is a total loss,
DeRoss is grateful that Venable will recover, although her physicians
say she faces many months of treatment and rehabilitation.
DeRoss is asking for monetary donations to help Venable, a single
mother of two, pay rent and other bills. She has no medical insurance.
Individuals wishing to contribute may contact him at (951) 282-8113 or
call Camp Buckhorn at 659-2995.
The other party involved in the collision, Jose Oscar Curiel, 46, of
Yuba City, was not injured in the crash, although the 2006 Ford F350
pickup he was driving was moderately damaged.
The CHP is conducting an ongoing investigation into the cause of the
collision and has no other details to release at this time.
