Do a complete analysis and close reading of your poem.. Use the sheet provided in class: Explication of Poetry: Questions to Ask of All Poems. Your analysis should include a complete scansion of the poem and notes on all aspects of the poems structure and meaning. This is the basic work you need to do BEFORE you decide what you are going to write about. You might want to photocopy the poem multiple times and make specific notes on the imagery, meter, rhyme, figures of speech, personification, metaphor, paradox, tone, diction, voice, theme(s), intended audience and other topics. The second step in this process is to come up with an interesting, complex, provable thesis. You need to make an argument about some aspect of your poem. Your close reading and analysis will provide the material you need to back up your argument. Example of a strong thesis statement: Rossettis Birthday, a poem about love fulfilled, has none of the erotic longing of typical love poetry and, thus, becomes a poem about religion rather than love.
