IFPD meeting contentious
By J.P.
Crumrine, News
Editor
The Idyllwild Fire Department’s conference room was filled for the Aug.
28 special meeting. Local tree contractors and Mountain Communities
Fire Safe Council (FSC) members concerned with the Idyllwild Fire
Protection District (IFPD) commission’s abatement program came in
numbers to express reservations and obtain a better understanding of
the commission’s purpose and plans.
The intensity was high at both ends of the room.
The board asked the tree contractors to form an
organization or committee to represent them at future meetings, as well
as formulate a proposal for a new fire abatement contract.
Three deaths in holiday collisions
By Beth Nottley, News
Assistant
The Labor Day weekend brought tragedy to the
Hill as three people, two of whom were local residents, died in three
separate traffic collisions from Friday, Aug. 29 to Tuesday, Sept. 2.
All three incidents involved the driver crossing over the double yellow
lines on Highway 74.
At about 1:50 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, Jerrald
Jarvis, 66, of Anza, was driving his 2002 Harley-Davidson eastbound on
Highway 74 west of McCall Park Road at mile marker 57.75 in Mountain
Center when he crossed over the double yellow lines. Jarvis collided
head-on with a box truck driven by Saul Villa, 29, of Los Angeles.
Jarvis was then ejected from his motorcycle, thrown back into the
eastbound lane and struck by a 1992 Jeep Wrangler driven by James
White, 59, of Norco.
Jarvis was pronounced dead at the scene but then
revived by an unidentified U.S. Forest Service employee. An American
Medical Rescue ambulance transported him to Hemet Valley Medical
Center, but he ultimately died of injuries at 3:17 p.m.

Man survives
Suicide Rock fall
By J.P. Crumrine,
News Editor
After falling 85 to 100 feet down Suicide Rock, landing on his head and
becoming blue from lack of oxygen early afternoon Saturday, a beginning
climber appears to have survived with head injuries and a broken neck.
Not only is he alive, but he appears to have no paralysis.
Besides an abundant amount of good luck, Trevor [last name unknown] of
Orange County was fortunate to have taken the fall on a day when plenty
of experienced climbers, including Clark Jacobs of Pine Cove, were
already on or around Suicide Rock.
Trevor’s climbing partner, Claire [last name unknown] of Orange County,
suffered face and arm injuries that were major, but not life
threatening.
